Working as a nursing assistant can be quite stressful sometime but no matter how tried or stressed you are, always keep a smile on your face. Children especially the younger ones are scared of people with angry faces and will never open let you aid them if you are shouting or making angry and frustrated faces.

Do not hesitate to learn new things on your own

Not everything will be taught in your training program. Although you will learn to deal with patients of every age, there are few things you need to learn on your own. Say chatting with the patient to keep them engaged or making them feel comfortable no matter how dire their situation is. Do not hesitate to learn new things on your own. You can always ask for help from senior staff in you are lost in confusions or dilemma.

Open yourself first and only then the children will trust you

It is really difficult to gain the trust of the children. This is because they are hard understand and since they cannot communicate properly it becomes even more difficult. Unless you open yourself to them, you will never be able to gain their trust.

Don’t act as senior instead act as a friend

Try to be friendly with the children and make them feel that you are a friend not a senior. They won’t accept t right away but as you open yourself to them and start talking to them they will slowly open themselves to you.

Try to think from the children prospective

Children look at everything from a different point of view. It is completely different than what we see and think so unless you come up with something they understand and make them feel secure they won’t let you treat them. An experienced CNA will know what exactly the child is thinking and how to explain a medical treatment in a way they will understand and feel safe.

Tips for CNA’s on How to Take Care of Children

Read them the fairy tales or stories; make them laugh and gain in their trust

Children love fairy tales especially when they are in their bed trying to sleep. You can gain in their trust by reading them the stories they love and making them laugh. They might feel lonely sometime, let them hear jokes from you or listen to their tales to keep them busy.

Children are afraid of hospitals; make them feel safe

Children do not like to stay at hospitals; they are afraid of needles and believe that they will be hurt there. Unless you help them overcome their fear, they will not let you treat them. So it is up to you to make them feel safe during their stay at the hospitals. Let them sleep with their dolls and make them feel you are their friend and that you will take care of them no matter what.

Ensure that the children eat their meals and take the medication

As a nursing assistant it is your major duty to feed them and ensure that they are getting plenty of fluids and nutrition as stated by the doctors. It is also up to you to make them take the drugs and medicines prescribed by the doctors. But remember unless you gain their trust, they won’t let you feed them no matter what.

Divide patients based on the need of care

Often times CNAs will be engaged with more than one patient and in case of emergencies they might have to take care of up to ten patients. But not all patients will need the same amount of care and attention so you need to divide the patients based on the need of the care and act accordingly.

Monitor the Vital Signs of the children regularly

As a CNA it is your responsibility to take the vital signs of the children under your care at regular intervals. It needs to be recorded clearly and if anything seems abnormal you need to call the senior staffs right away. Remember that the life of the patient depends on you so take every action carefully.

The Bottom Line

Children are difficult to handle. They won’t trust any strangers right away. And since most of them are afraid of hospitals, it makes it really hard for nursing assistant to provide them the medical and nursing aid. Follow the tips mentioned above, they will surely help you gain the trust of the children.
