You cannot expect the new CNA to know everything. All nursing assistants need to be certified, but this is not sufficient to know every single thing associated with their duties. You being a mentor, it’s your responsibility to teach them. While teaching and suggesting them, you should be careful to the answers you deliver and the way you deliver. You should be respecting their questions and courteous while answering to them.

 

Another important thing a new CNA will seek to learn from you is to learn the way you work. Let them observe you! You should not be giving them any hard responsibilities which don’t allow them to make time to observe you. Do not make mistakes while you are being observed. Do not show any shortcuts to the newbie. This may adversely help them to develop laid down attitude.

 

Try to make a routine for your work that is adjustable to new ones. The routine must be able to cover your daily work as well as manage time to supervise the new ones. You should be thinking of break times. The new ones may need more break times than you actually think. Be flexible to this.

 

Mentoring new nursing assistant is your added responsibility, however only experienced CNAs will have the privilege of mentoring new people. This will help you to earn extra credibility in your institution as well as provide you a good reputation with gratifying words, both from patients and your colleagues.
