Your First Day Work Job As a CNA

After completion of your CNA training, adjusting yourself to your new professional life can be tough and challenging. You may feel very insecure as you leave the safety net of supervised care giving and handle your first patient. The first day in job may be very stressful and challenging and event the high quality CNA programs cannot prepare you for the first day. Therefore, it will be useful for you to prepare yourself and you may also consider making a plan of action for your first day at job.

Considering the first-day preparation, it will be very useful to know your shift in advance and plan accordingly. Each patient is unique for his/her needs and care requirements, thus knowing physical limitations, medical history and doctor’s supervision till date. You also need to figure out the physical capacities/inabilities of patients in regards to the everyday movement related activities. This may include their ability for bathing, dressing, taking meal and perform other necessary everyday actions. You should know and pay special attention to the dietary orders, test results, behavioral needs, special characters, conversation obligations, safety issues. You should also check if anyone needs special supervision or monitoring due to poor vision, hearing deficiency, risk for falls or an unstable condition. You can make an overview for assessing aforementioned status by checking test results and their vital indicators such as blood pressure, blood sugar level, body temperature and heart rate.

For the case if your new workplace doesn’t provide you the beginning shift report, you should look for a way to make it happen. Most of the health care facilities provide a hand-written or computer generated assignment sheets including previous health reports. You can use these reports and kits to plan your plan of action or a ‘to do list’ accordingly. If in case, no such reports are available you can make your own by using column for I & O, vital signs, blood sugar, dietary needs, ADL assistance, specimen collection, activity needs and everyday behavior of patients. Making special note for the tasks that are needed to be executed at specific time for any special patient care during your shift-timing can also help you to become efficient.

Seeking help from work colleagues and experienced employees can also be helpful for your first day at job.
